Theme: Burden of Gravity – From Waking to Space
Gravity anchors each of our days. Things, objects, concepts, ideas, values, or people attract us in various ways. We shape and express our attitudes in relation to gravity – either by yielding to it or by fighting against it. We allow ourselves to be drawn in, or we struggle against the pull. Various organisms strive to defy gravity and learn to fly. Birds, which have evolved wings; trees, which are able to migrate across the planet through their seeds; people, who invent machines for flying. But when gravity is completely lost, there is a risk of losing one’s direction. Research shows that plants growing in space do not know which way to grow and grow in the opposite direction. A group of jellyfish sent into space in 1991 demonstrated that the state of weightlessness is an environment where they thrive far better and reproduce more quickly, however, in newly born jellyfish in space, the statocysts (sensory organs used to perceive the body’s position in space) do not develop properly, as a result of which they were disoriented upon returning to Earth, unable to adapt to gravity and continue living. Gravity is thus a matter of our entire development.
The program will explore and reflect on the issue of gravity and its weight – through both theoretical and experiential, affective, and bodily experiences. Together, we will also reflect on what kinds of knowledge exist and how they influence us. What is holding you back? What is holding you down? And what does the concept of levitation – as the opposite of gravity – mean to you?
About András
András Cséfalvay is a visual artist, mythopoet, and Associate Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava. After studying painting and mathematics, he focused his research on the reality and usefulness of fiction. Through digital animation, installations and world-building he investigates "non-human" perspectives—from extinct species to subatomic particles and AI. His work interrogates the relationship between culture and technology, and the political and ethical aspects of listening to non-dominant voices in world interpretation. He is the recipient of the Oscar Cepan Prize and Tatra Banka Grand Prize for visual artists. His recent exhibitions include KW Berlin, Trafo Budapest, Muzeum Sztuki Lodz, Art-in-General New York, Karlin Studios Prague and National Gallery Budapest. He is co-founder of the Digital Arts Platform.
About As We Grow
As We Grow is our educational research program. Focusing on intergenerational dialogue and the related exchange of experiences is at the core of AWG. Each iteration is unique. Each is designed in a dialogue with the leading artist. AWG encourages learning through making attitudes and culminates in a group exhibition. In 2023, we strengthened our AWG and consequently focused on supporting early-career artists.
About SVĚTOVA 1
SVĚTOVA 1 is a community-based nonprofit artist-run space and a platform focused on emerging, queer, and social matters. Through exhibitions, public programs, and educational activities. Our mission is to continuously aspire to become a safer space, support our fellow friends, maintain sustainable processes, and act as a refuge for those in need. We aim to become an educational and research institute – run by artists for artists. In recent years, AWG has been kindly supported by the Ministry of Culture Czech Republic Arts Grant, and the Culture Fund of the Czech Republic Arts Grant.
